Hanzhong in southwest Shaanxi province is named after the Hanjiang River and has been known as "Tianhan" since ancient times. The city is bordered by the Qinling Mountains in the north, and the Bashan Mountains to the south. It is rated as one of the 10 most beautiful cities in China and is famed as the "Hometown of Han People". Hanzhong is the source of the Hanjiang River, the largest tributary of the Yangtze River. It is an important connecting hub between the Guanzhong-Tianshui Economic Zone and the Chengyu Economic Zone. It is a must visit from Chengdu to Xi'an and the main birthplace of the culture of the Three Kingdoms and the Han Dynasty. Hanzhong has four of the nation's treasures: the crested ibis, giant panda, golden monkey and takin. It is listed as a national historical and cultural city, an excellent tourist city in China and a national ecological construction demonstration city and was among the first batch of national tourism demonstration areas.
