When German premium automaker Audi removed the traditional four-ring badge, could it still be accepted by the market? This was the question facing the new Audi four-letter brand AUDI in China's EV market, the world's most fiercely competitive and cutthroat arena.
The misgivings soon proved unnecessary: in no more than three months after its launch, the first model, the AUDI E5 Sportback, garnered a string of professional awards.
On Tuesday, the model, developed in partnership with Chinese automaker SAIC Motor and tailored exclusively for the Chinese market, took home two accolades: the 2025 Weibo Annual Influential Vehicle and Weibo Car of the Year.
Hosted by Sina Weibo, China's equivalent of the X social media platform, the Weibo Annual Car Election Awards selects the year's standout models through a dual-track mechanism. It consists of Weibo user votes and 100 key opinion leaders' professional evaluations, ensuring the selection process is credible and authoritative.
A total of 182 models made the finalist list among 383 models this year. These spanned traditional luxury brands, mainstream brands and startups, fuel-powered, hybrid and electric vehicles.
"AUDI shares the same pioneering spirit as young people who explore new horizons, express their individuality and connect with one another via Weibo," the brand said in its winner's speech. "Since its launch, our stand-alone EV brand has stood by this ethos, striving to accompany every trailblazer who dares to explore and embrace change."
The latest accolades follow the model being named the 2026 China Car of the Year in early January. Outperforming 1,000 new models, the AUDI E5 Sportback has set a record that it is the first model of a new brand to win the award within a year of its launch.
The 2026 China Car of the Year was jointly evaluated by a jury of mainstream Chinese automotive media and industry experts. The selection process involves multiple rounds of rigorous real-vehicle testing and comprehensive assessments, with a focus on core dimensions including innovation, design aesthetics and performance.
Unlike honors driven by market visibility or fan base effect, this award is based on comprehensive and strict evaluations of a model's design, innovation, performance and value by professional judges. The AUDI E5 Sportback's victory signifies that it has received the highest industry acclaim at the professional level.
Gernot Doellner, CEO of Audi, said: "This award validates our unique approach in China with two strong brands and deep integration of local innovation. Through the AUDI brand, we are attracting new customers and strengthening our position in the world's most competitive market. Consumer and expert feedback demonstrates that our ongoing transformation journey in China toward electrification and intelligent connected driving is on course."
"As the first model from the new AUDI brand, it truly represents the brand's spirit: the best of both worlds. The AUDI brand was conceived from a deep understanding of the Chinese market," said Fermin Soneira, CEO of the Audi and SAIC cooperation project.
"It addresses a new generation of Chinese consumers who want Audi's driving dynamics, quality, and safety, as well as seamless integration into their intelligent digital ecosystem. The E5 Sportback is the exact embodiment of this holistic premium commitment," Soneira added.
Strong product
The AUDI E5 Sportback is a crucial cornerstone of Audi's electrification strategy in China. It not only inherits Audi brand's core value of "Vorsprung durch Technik" (Progress through Technology) but also integrates German precision engineering with China's digital innovation ecosystem, achieving all-round evolution in design, performance and intelligence to build a strong product in the premium EV market.
The four-door electric fastback innovatively combines Audi's classic coupe silhouette, paired with the exclusive "star diamond light curtain" design, depicting a futuristic visual symbol where every line embodies the aesthetic ambition of the electric era.
Built on the new Advanced Digitized Platform, it is powered by front and rear permanent magnet synchronous dual motors. With CATL's cell-to-pack battery, the EV has a maximum range of 770 kilometers. Based on an 800-volt platform architecture, it can charge 380 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes.
The model can deliver up to 579 kilowatts via four powertrain variants and is available with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, accelerating from 0-100 km per hour in 3.4 seconds.
The ADP platform also enables next-generation connected vehicle functionality and over-the-air updates.
Centered on the all-new AUDI operating system and integrated with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 digital cockpit chip, the car offers a new generation of ultra-sensory interactive digital cockpit.
Furthermore, in collaboration with leading Chinese technology company Momenta, it has developed the industry's first advanced driver assistance system that integrates Audi Driving DNA and an end-to-end large model. This system not only accurately adapts to complex Chinese road conditions and user driving preferences but also maintains the pure Audi driving feel even in assisted driving mode.
In December 2025, the AUDI E5 Sportback completed its first over-the-air update, adding more than 10 practical functions and optimizing over 200 user experience details, realizing the progressive evolution of intelligent travel.
The in-car assistant features 35 scenario-based virtual avatars, such as for holiday greetings, in an effort to enhance interactions with greater emotional resonance and a sense of ritual. Meanwhile, when switching driving modes, the Audi Assistant offers new dynamic displays to enhance the user experience, making transitions more intuitive and visual.
Behind this product strength lies the backing of SAIC Audi's AUDI smart manufacturing base. Located in Shanghai, the factory is closely aligned with Audi's Ingolstadt base in Germany. Strictly adhering to Audi's global unified manufacturing and process standards, it exclusively produces AUDI models with an annual capacity of 360,000 units.
The base features core advantages such as highly automated production, cutting-edge technology applications including machine learning for quality control, and a fully digital production management system. It not only deeply integrates the efficiency and cost advantages of the local supply chain but also upholds the sophisticated craftsmanship of German precision engineering.
From "two winters and two summers" all-climate road tests and final performance certification by Audi's German headquarters, to high-voltage safety tests that exceed national standards and vehicle tests simulating extreme environments, the commitment of "One Audi, One Standard, One Quality" has laid a foundation for the reliability and premium nature of the E5 Sportback.
In 2025, SAIC Audi sold 47,258 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 23 percent. Among them, the cumulative sales of the AUDI E5 Sportback have exceeded 6,650 units since its launch in September. Monthly sales have maintained a steady sequential growth.
SAIC Audi is continuing to upgrade service quality and accelerate channel expansion. Currently, the number of exclusive full-function user centers integrating sales and experience exceeds 200, covering more than 100 cities, making it the only joint-venture premium brand still expanding its network layout.
In 2025, the first exclusive AUDI store in China opened in Chongqing, focusing on the display and sales of AUDI models. It also created an immersive space for users that combines premium textures, digital experiences and personalized services.
The success of the E5 Sportback has injected strong confidence into Audi's brand electrification transformation and anchored a clear direction for development.
Following the debut of the E SUV Concept at the 2025 Guangzhou Auto Show, the images of the second model, the AUDI E7X, were released at the end of 2025, with plans for a production model debut at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show in April.
AUDI will continue to deepen its presence in China's premium electric vehicle market through a product portfolio covering multiple market segments, the brand said.
Collaboration evolution
Looking back on the history of Sino-foreign automotive collaborations, the early 1.0 era was defined by foreign dominance. Overseas automakers provided technology and products, while Chinese partners focused on sales and market expansion.
As collaboration deepened, the 2.0 era emerged, characterized by closer cooperation and an open, win-win mindset. Both parties jointly developed new products tailored to the Chinese market, empowering joint ventures to build strong localized R&D capabilities and even advance toward comprehensive vehicle development expertise.
Today, confronted with the rise of Chinese brands and the rapid leadership in technology pathways within China's EV market, Sino-foreign cooperation has entered a new phase requiring deep integration.
Audi and SAIC have announced collaboration to develop the Advanced Digitized Platform, leveraging the Chinese partner's advantages to integrate local electrification and intelligent industry chains.
Aimed at enabling the joint venture brand to "win in China first, then win globally", this partnership elevates the collaboration model to a 3.0 new era of "integrated development between Chinese and foreign shareholders".
From the 2.0 to 3.0 era, traditional premium brands have refused to remain passive defenders. Instead, they are launching systematic, localized and proactive initiatives — and Audi is at the forefront of this shift.
Audi is also facing dual pressure from startups like Nio and XPeng, as well as traditional giants like BYD and tech players such as Huawei in the Chinese market. It is addressing the market's expectations for "premium electrification" through a combination of German engineering heritage and Chinese smart technology.
AUDI and the E5 Sportback have responded: Only in China, the world's most competitive proving ground for EVs, by integrating heritage with intelligent and electrified capabilities that meet Chinese users' needs, can the optimal solution for premium cars in the new era be achieved.
While the E5 Sportback has yet to claim the top spot in sales rankings, it continues to earn respect and recognition in the competitive premium EV market through steady, substantive efforts. This includes securing authoritative acclaim with outstanding product strength, aligning with local needs, upholding global quality standards, and steadily building a user ecosystem.
As the debut model of the new AUDI brand, the E5 Sportback has won the hearts of both industry professionals and ordinary consumers, a testament that the brand is on the right track.
In the industry marathon to redefine premium electrification, AUDI is marching forward steadily with unwavering resolve, setting a new benchmark for the electrification transformation of traditional premium brands.
