Senior legislator surrenders for probe
Luo Baoming, former deputy head of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee of the 13th National People's Congress, China's top legislature, is being investigated for suspected serious violations of Party discipline and national laws, according to the country's top anti-corruption bodies. The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision announced the investigation on Thursday, stating that Luo voluntarily turned himself in to authorities. Luo, 71, hails from Tianjin and began his career in 1969. In August 2011, he was appointed as the Party secretary of Hainan. In March 2018, Luo took on the role of deputy head of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee of the 13th NPC.
Aircraft carrier's 3rd sea trial confirmed
The third sea trial of China's third aircraft carrier, CNS Fujian, was confirmed by the Ministry of National Defense on Thursday. Ministry spokesman Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang said at a news conference in Beijing that the sea trial is a normal arrangement in the process of aircraft carrier construction. "Follow-up test projects will be gradually initiated in accordance with the progress of aircraft carrier construction," he said.
2 missing after mudslide in Jilin
Two people remain missing following a mudslide triggered by heavy downpours on Wednesday in Jilin province, local authorities said on Thursday. Around 6:20 pm on Wednesday, a mudslide in Naozhi township, in the city of Linjiang, caused two people to fall into water. Heavy rainfall started in the township at about 5 pm on Wednesday, with 96.8 millimeters of rain falling in two hours, the city's flood control and drought relief headquarters said. Rescue work is continuing, and some 125 residents have been relocated.
Top court protects private enterprises
Chinese courts will work to ensure law-based protection of the property rights and personality rights of private enterprises and entrepreneurs, the Supreme People's Court said on Wednesday. The top court has urged effective measures to prevent administrative and criminal interference in economic disputes and minimize the negative impact of lawsuits on business operations and production to the greatest extent possible.
